The Parable of the Oranges

Two employees were asked to buy oranges for their boss.

The first went to the store, bought oranges, and returned.

The second asked questions.

What kind of oranges?
What were they for?
How many guests?
What’s the best orange for juice?
Can we get a quantity discount?

Same task. Very different mindset.

The first employee completed the assignment.
The second solved the problem.

That’s the difference between someone who works for the job and someone who works for the mission.

Great employees don’t just execute instructions.

They think, anticipate, and care about the outcome.

That’s what leaders notice.

And that’s usually who gets promoted.

“In my Vistage groups, the best leaders I see are the ones who teach their teams to think beyond the assignment and understand the outcome.”
